Lake St Clair

Travel Guide - Lake St Clair is Australia's deepest freshwater lake at over 170 metres and forms the southern boundary of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It's also the end point of the Overland Track, one of the world's best multi-day bushwalks. During summer and autumn, rangers offer a variety of activities including walks, talks and slide shows for adults and children. There a number of short walks from the interpretation centre around the shores of the Lake at Cynthia Bay. Some of the most spectacular walks take three to four hours or overnight - such as the walks to Shadow Lake and Forgotten Lake. Most of Australia's mammals are nocturnal but at dusk or dawn around Cynthia Bay you'll see two species of wallaby - the Bennetts wallaby and the smaller more timid Tasmanian pademelon. Sometimes wombats and quolls emerge after dark. Echidnas and platypuses are also common. Birdlife including black currawongs, strong-billed and black-headed honeyeaters and the yellow wattlebird, are common. Try fishing, boating or the ferry service that travels the 18 km length of the lake to meet bushwalkers completing the Overland Track or why not catch the ferry up the lake and then walk the three hours back.
